Washington Post endorsement: "Mr. Obama has the potential to become a great president."

Mr. Obama is a man of supple intelligence, with a nuanced grasp of complex issues and evident skill at conciliation and consensus-building.

At home, we believe, he would respond to the economic crisis with a healthy respect for markets tempered by justified dismay over rising inequality and an understanding of the need for focused regulation.

Abroad, the best evidence suggests that he would seek to maintain U.S. leadership and engagement, continue the fight against terrorists, and wage vigorous diplomacy on behalf of U.S. values and interests.

Mr. Obama has the potential to become a great president. Given the enormous problems he would confront from his first day in office, and the damage wrought over the past eight years, we would settle for very good.

Obama believes in the general decency and generosity of the American people.

That tells you volumes about how out of touch with people he really is. The guy has obviously never run a business before. He has obviously never read of the welfare abuses that resulted in the 5 years lifetime maximum.

Isn't faith in the decency and generosity of people what got us in a lot of these messes in the first place? No oversight and no real punishment?

Sorry, folks. I have no faith in the decency and generosity of anyone. American or not, it has nothing to do with it. Given half a chance most people will take as much as they can get and screw as many people as they can in the process.

Now before any of you get all sanctimonious on me, look at yourself. Tell me you go into work and work your ass off, then go to a second job and work your ass off. Tell me you do that day in and day out, whether the boss is there or not. Tell me if you were left alone in a store you wouldn't grab a pop for free or maybe run a 12-pack of beer out to your car.

Re: Anonymous 7:20 PM.

Is that you Senator McCain? I guess you have lots of free time now that you know you don't stand a chance in hell at winning the election.

I think what you need to do is look at yourself. Most people who think the world is filled with greedy, ignorant assholes are most often getting back what they give. If you behave like an decent human being people generally are decent in response. I would suggest you try it some time but your post proves it's too late for you. Why don't you and the rest of the 10% of Americans who think W. is doing a heckuva job go jump off a cliff.

I have an old saying, "edge hangs together".

No. Everyone is NOT like you. You need to get new friends.

You appear to have zero understanding of what authentic, positive leadership is and can do.

It's not soft, it's hard. Our best leaders have ALWAYS expected the most from us..AND themselves.

Dude. Start reading, expand your horizons.

So were Lincoln and Kennedy, but being a great President is a dangerous job. Being a puppet is safe and you get petted a lot.
